SJP Weight Loss announces highest level bariatric accreditation

The bariatric surgery center at St. John Hospital and Medical Center has been accredited as a Level I facility by the Bariatric Surgery Center Network (BSCN) Accreditation Program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). To earn this designation, St. John Hospital met essential criteria that ensure it is fully capable of supporting a bariatric surgery care program and that its institutional performance meets the requirements outlined by the ACS BSCN Accreditation Program.

There are four categories of accreditation for inpatient facilities (Level 1a, 1b, 2a and 2b) and one level for outpatient surgical care facilities. St. John Hospital is accredited at the highest level as a Level 1a facility. Hospitals undergo rigorous onsite verification by experienced bariatric surgeons, who review the center’s structure, process, outcomes and quality of data using the current ACS Bariatric Surgery Center Network Accreditation Program Manual as a guideline.

To document outcomes using reliable measurements, accredited bariatric surgery centers are required to report their outcomes data either to the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP) or the College’s BSCN Database using a web-based data entry system.

St. John Hospital joins St. John Macomb Oakland Hospital – Oakland Center as the second accredited bariatric program within SJPHS. Oakland Center received accreditation from the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery in 2009 and was renewed in 2011.

Accreditation is an essential component for system-wide strategic growth and coordination of care. It also ensures the program is multi-disciplinary and that comprehensive care pathways are established, patient education occurs pre- and post-operatively, physical accommodation standards are met for patient safety and comfort and quality standards are achieved. The center has resources in place for optimal care of morbidly obese patients and the support services necessary to address the entire spectrum of care and needs of bariatric patients.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has recognized St. John Hospital and now allows expanded Medicare coverage of bariatric surgery for beneficiaries of all ages who have been diagnosed with other health problems associated with obesity. However, approval of bariatric procedures is limited to facilities certified by the American College of Surgeons or the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery which now includes St. John Macomb Oakland Hospital – Oakland Center and St. John Hospital and Medical Center.
