Infant Mortality Project
“Empowering families to help themselves”
The Infant Mortality Project empowers families to help themselves by making a connection with mothers, fathers and other family members to help build and sustain families, reverse the high infant mortality rate, promote literacy and increase access to health care. The Infant Mortality Project is a collection of five free programs: the Parent-Infant-Partner (PIP), Read Write Now, Jubilee Support Groups, Fatherhood and Study Circles.
Parent-Infant-Partner (PIP) trains volunteers to act as advocates and mentors for high-risk pregnant women. Volunteers are matched with expectant mothers to provide emotional support before, during and after pregnancy.
Read Write Now provides education counseling for clients. Volunteers help clients on a one-on-one basis.
Jubilee offers support groups to mothers and their children under 5 years old. The support groups emphasize peer support, availability of community services, parenting skills, literacy, health promotion and domestic violence education.
The Fatherhood program assists fathers and other male support persons to maintain involvement with their children and families through:
- Mentoring
- Father family groups
- Activities that promote healthy relationships
Study Circles are voluntary, informal study groups that meet weekly. Discussion topics are selected by program participants.
