Pregnancy & Childbirth
New Life Center for traditional and high-risk births
The New Life Center in Southfield continues to be the choice of many families, providing family-centered birth options for women. The Labor-Delivery-Recovery (LDR) rooms offer the best of both worlds to women giving birth: a patient-centered setting backed by sophisticated technology, should the need arise. In Providence’s 10 LDRs and two high-risk LDRs, the entire birthing process can take place in a warm, nurturing environment without the patient moving from room to room with to room with each phase of childbirth. “Couplet care,” where babies remain in the room with mothers, is stressed, encouraging important bonding in the first hours after birth.
The Providence New Life Center also has a wide range of pain control options available.

Providence Alternative Birthing Center – the other place to have a baby
The philosophy of the unit is to foster a natural birth experience – one that does not routinely require medical intervention – and one that respects your privacy while encouraging family involvement.
The Birthing Center rooms are equipped with queensize beds, a hydrotherapy tub for relaxation during labor, birthing chairs, comfortable recliner chairs, a refrigerator and many more amenities. As part of our continuing service of care, a member of the Providence ABC Unit team will follow up with you by phone after you return home.
The Alternative Birthing Center (ABC) at Providence Hospital offers expectant mothers a low-risk birthing option in a homelike setting designed for a natural childbirth experience. We look forward to helping make the birth of your child the personal experience it should be.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for babies who need special care
At times, mothers give birth to babies who need special care. In addition to medicine’s impressive advances, our heartfelt caring helps promote your baby’s healing and recovery. Providence offers a 15-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, where neonatologists and highly trained nurses provide specialized attention with a special loving touch for the tiniest and most fragile infants born at Providence.
A woman’s healthy lifestyle before and during pregnancy is very important to a baby’s development and health. Learning as much as possible about your body during pregnancy and knowing what to expect during labor and birth will make your entire birth experience more rewarding. At Providence, you and your family are encouraged to take advantage of the many opportunities available to prepare for childbirth and for the new baby who will be joining you.
