Alzheimer’s is a disease that causes changes in areas of the brain that control memory and reasoning. Why the disease develops is not yet fully understood. At present, it has no cure. But proper care can help most people with Alzheimer’s live a comfortable life for many years. St. John Providence Health System offers assisted living and nursing homes that can help Alzheimer's sufferers and their families cope with the disease. We also offer support groups for Alzheimer's patients and their families.

Alcohol Use and Memory

Heavy alcohol consumption may affect short-term memory, according to a study in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research. Heavy drinkers reported more than 30 percent more memory-related problems than those who said they didn't drink, and almost 25 percent more problems than those who said they drank only small amounts. Memory problems included missing appointments, forgetting birthdays and neglecting to pay bills on time.
