Here are just some of the extensive programs and services we provide at the Assarian Cancer Center.
Many types of cancer can be effectively treated with chemotherapy, the use of intravenous or pill-form drugs developed to target and kill cancer cells. For some cancers, chemotherapy may be the stand-alone treatment. Often it is combined with surgery or radiation therapy.
Through affiliations with national organizations and research partnerships, our medical oncologists are able to offer many progressive and aggressive cancer therapies. Clinical trials are available to patients who meet research criteria.
Certain cancer tumors can be removed through surgery. Sometimes surgery is a stand-alone treatment option. For other people, it may be combined with radiation and/or chemotherapy. Surgical specialization is available in breast, thoracic (lung and esophagus), colorectal, urological, prostate, pancreatic, and gynecologic cancers. Our oncology surgeons also collaborate with diagnostic imaging radiologists to offer radiofrequency ablation to patients who are candidates for the procedure.
Dedicated Inpatient Unit
Inpatient care is provided in a unit specially designed for people with cancer. Our oncology unit boasts private rooms laid out in a soothing environment.
Oncology nurses abide by a family-oriented philosophy designed to empower and support patients and their loved ones. They adhere to the standards established by the National Oncology Nursing Society and several are certified by the Oncology Nursing Society. Specially trained nurses are able to administer chemotherapy and biotherapy conveniently on the unit.
A designated oncology pharmacist ensures effective, safe delivery of state-of-the-art chemotherapy and other medications. Assigned only to patients with cancer, the oncology pharmacist also helps to monitor possible drug interactions.
At the Van Elslander Cancer Center, we offer comprehensive radiation therapy services in a compassionate, caring environment few hospitals in the nation can match. Patients at the Center often have access to new cancer treatments before they are widely available.
How does it work?
Radiation therapy is the treatment of cancer using penetrating beams of high-energy waves called radiation. The radiation used for cancer treatment comes from special machines or from radioactive substances. In small doses over a period of several weeks, the diseased area is exposed to highly focused energy waves that disrupt the ability of the cancer cells to grow and multiply. Treatment is generally painless, though some patients experience side effects.
Our expert radiation oncologists will work with you and your physician to determine the most effective and most appropriate treatment option.
