Providence Hospital Alerts Patients to Missing External Hard Drive
Monday, April 5, 2010
The privacy and security of your personal information is of utmost importance to Providence Hospital and we take significant measures to protect it. We sent individual letters and are posting this notice as precautionary measures to advise affected patients of an incident that involved some patient information.
On February 9, 2010 we learned that an external hard drive used for backing-up computer data was missing from a locked office suite in Providence Hospital. It is believed to have been lost or stolen sometime between February 4 and February 5, 2010. The data on the external hard drive was limited to patient data on various reports, and was NOT inclusive of all patients in the hospital. Some of the files contained demographic information, which included name, medical record number and/or clinical information. Patient social security numbers and health insurance identification numbers were NOT included in the information on the missing hard drive, except in the case of 12 persons who are being separately notified. Upon discovering this incident, we commenced an investigation and a police report has been filed. If you have any questions about this, please contact us at 866-501-3627.
Rest assured that we have addressed this incident and are taking the necessary and appropriate steps to help prevent this from occurring in the future. Law enforcement officials estimate that over two million computers are stolen annually for resale only and not for the information on them. We have received no information or evidence that an unauthorized person has obtained the information or is using it.
Providence Hospital is committed to maintaining the privacy of patient information and takes many precautions to safeguard patient information. In response to incidents like this one, we are continually modifying our practices to enhance the security of our patients' information. We are committed to fully protecting all of the information that has been entrusted to us.
