Description:
The Craniofacial Institute at Providence Hospital is one of a number throughout the United States. It involves a cooperative effort, particularly with neurosurgery and, to some extent, with oral surgery. The three plastic surgeons involved in this area are Dr. Ian T. Jackson, Dr. Robert A. Forte, and Dr. Matthew L. Rontal. Dr. Jeffrey Topf is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon who is involved in some aspects of craniomaxillofacial surgery. Other individuals include orthodontists, prosthodontist, ophthalmologists and ENT surgeons. This is truly a team effort. This is a very experienced team who has been doing this kind of surgery for many years.
In addition to the management of congenital anomalies, skull base, orbital and nasal tumors are also treated using many of the techniques, which have evolved from the management of craniofacial anomalies. Additionally, there is acute craniofacial trauma and the sequelae of such acute trauma referred to us because of the unique experience having been achieved as a result of the management of congenital craniofacial anomalies. In some cases, it is necessary to perform free tissue transfer using microsurgical techniques.
Providence Hospital has an excellent library, which is well stocked with plastic surgery textbooks. There are also libraries available in the Institute of Craniofacial and Reconstructive Surgery and other offices, and the students are welcome to utilize these facilities.
