Medical Student Electives - Infectious Disease

Rotation  Directors:  Vilma Drelichman, M.D., F.A.C.P., F.I.D.S.A. and Tania Little, D.O., M.P.H.

Duration:  One month

Maximum number of student per four-week period:  Two

Candidates:  Senior students of approved allopathic and osteopathic medical schools

Objectives:

1. To become familiar with clinical evaluation of patients with infections relative to diagnosis, cost-effective antibiotic therapy, applied medical microbiology, basic immunology and pharmacokinetics of antimicrobial agents. 
2. To become acquainted with laboratory studies pertaining to the infectious disease patient, i.e. clinical microbiology, serum chemistries, immunological studies and radiologic studies. 
3. To participate in clinical, laboratory and outcome research. 
4. To observe and participate in invasive and diagnostic procedures associated with infectious disease patients.  
5. To encourage journal and textbook reading. 

Description:

The Infectious Disease rotation at Providence Hospital is a consultative service under the direction of a full-time board-certified faculty member.  The above educational objectives can be achieved by:

1. Following and performing the infectious disease consultation on a small number of patients and presenting the history, physical findings, and impressions to the attending;
2. Participating in formal infectious disease teaching rounds and daily rounds with the attending;
3. Reviewing laboratory and radiology studies pertaining to infectious disease patients, such as clinical microbiology, serum chemistries, immunological studies, and radiologic studies;
4. Observing and participating in invasive and diagnostic procedures associated with infectious disease patients;
5. Taking part in basic research on a selected clinical study;
6. Attending the Infectious Disease Conference on the second Monday of each month, which consists of the presentation of an interesting case;
7. Attending the monthly journal club which meets the last Monday of the month; and
8. Attending ID Grand Rounds at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI.
