Providence Hospital was recently named one of the nation's top 15 major teaching hospitals by Thomson, one of the country's leading sources of  health care information and research.

Providence Hospital is a clinical campus for third year medical students from American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine, Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and Wayne State University School of Medicine.  Students from these schools must notify their medical school if they are interested in being placed at Providence Hospital for core rotations.  Selection of students is determined by each school.

Students in good standing from the following medical schools are eligible to take elective rotations at Providence Hospital:  all LCME-accredited schools in the United States and Canada, all AOA-accredited schools, the American University of the Caribbean, St. George's University, SABA University and Ross University.  Students must have approval of their medical school to take elective rotations at Providence Hospital and provide us with the requested documentation.

Wayne State University School of Medicine students must arrange electives at Providence through their medical school.

Students from the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine are no longer allowed to start electives at Providence before starting their core rotations.  AUC students may begin their core rotations at Providence in July, September or March.

For Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine students, the following Providence electives meet the requirements for PCAC choice or specialty rotations:

Cardiology*, Complementary Medicine, Diagnostic Radiology, Endocrinology*, Family Medicine, Gastroenterology*, Geriatrics*, Hematology/Oncology*, Infectious Disease*, Internal Medicine, Nephrology*, Neurology, Orthopedic Surgery, Pathology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation**, Plastic Surgery, Primary Care Sports Medicine, Pulmonary* (*These rotations require the student to have completed inpatient or outpatient Internal Medicine.)  (**This rotation requires the student to have completed an inpatient rotation.)

To apply for a medical student elective rotation at  Providence Hospital, either fill out the online application and submit it electronically or download the paper application, fill it out and send it to the Providence Medical Student Coordinator at the address or fax number on the form.  The elective rotations available at Providence Hospital are shown below, as are the applications.

Any cancellations or changes to scheduled rotations must be made at least 30 days before the rotation is due to start.  Frequent changes or cancellations of rotations by a student may result in our refusal to schedule further Providence rotations for that student.  Failure to show up for a rotation is unprofessional and we reserve the right to cancel any other rotations for that student at Providence.  Other guidelines to note are:

  • All 4th year electives start on the first weekday of the month.
  • Internal medicine sub-internships are scheduled for 4 weeks or 1 month, depending on the school.  Rare exceptions are made to allow a three week sub-internship.
