Cancer patients in Macomb County and surrounding communities who receive care at St. John Providence Health System’s Van Elslander and Webber Cancer Centers are benefitting from $25,000 in proceeds from the 5th Annual Pink and Blue United for a Cause 5K Walk/Run.
Hosted by the Team Angels Foundation, the event took place at Stony Creek Metropolitan Park in Shelby Township on May 5 with more than 800 participants. The Team Angels Foundation consists of a group of dedicated women from the community who volunteer their time and talent raising funds for breast cancer research, to increase awareness that men are also at risk of breast cancer, and to help cancer patients who are facing financial hardships. Over the last five years, the walk has raised nearly $75,000.
Pam Daniele, a breast cancer survivor and employee at the Van Elslander Cancer Center, was instrumental in connecting St. John Providence with the Team Angels Foundation. Pam, together with the Team Angels Foundation, started the Pink and Blue United for a Cause Walk/Run, and has been the chairperson for the event since its inception in 2009.
“I wanted to bring more awareness about the care and services provided by the St. John Providence Van Elslander and Webber Cancer Centers,” Daniele said. To honor all her hard work, Daniele was recently elected as a member of the Team Angels Foundation Committee.
“I am thrilled how much this event has grown,” said Rosalba Pacella, Founder and President of Team Angels Foundation who lost her brother and a friend to breast cancer. “With the support and money raised, we can continue to help our loved ones, friends and neighbors in their fight against cancer. I am blessed to have so many wonderful people who donate their time, talent and treasures to our organization.”
“St. John Providence Health System is truly honored to partner with such an amazing group of women,” said Lori Lipa, Director of Van Elslander Cancer at St. John Hospital and Medical Center. “These monies have enabled us to improve the lives of hundreds of cancer patients with limited financial resources in our community, providing financial assistance to purchase medications, medical equipment and other items. In addition, monies were used toward programs that support cancer patients and their families such as cancer specific support groups, art therapy programs and bereavement programs.”
