SJPHS Cardiac Surgery Programs Receive Top Rating for Outcomes

Contact: Brian Taylor, 586-753-0726.

St. John Providence Health’s cardiac surgery programs have been awarded the prestigious “3 Star Rating” for coronary bypass by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) for the 12 month period 07/01/2011 – 6/30/2012. This is the highest overall composite score available from STS for cardiac surgery outcomes.

Nationally, only 10-15 percent of heart centers attain the STS three-star designation, which recognizes quality and clinical excellence.

Providence Hospital, St. John Hospital & Medical Center and St. John Macomb – Oakland Hospital, each also received the 3 Star designation for previous rating periods in 2010/2011.

The STS Adult Cardiac Surgery Database includes more than 4 million surgical records, representing an estimated 94 percent of all adult cardiac surgery centers in the United States, making it the largest such registry in the world. Nearly every hospital in the United States where coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery is performed participates. For every patient who has heart surgery, we submit 300 parameters recorded during the patient’s hospitalization, including demographics, risks, surgery performed, length of hospitalization, complications, and patient survival.

The composite score, which determines the star rating, is calculated using measures of quality divided in four broad categories: risk-adjusted mortality, risk-adjusted morbidity, the use of at least one of the internal mammary arteries for bypass grafting, and how often aspirin, beta-blockers and statins were prescribed.

Because the three-star rating is given by the STS National Database using analysis done by the Duke Clinical Research Institute and is based on quality and statistical analysis, it is clear that St. John Providence Health System’s cardiac surgery programs deliver the highest level of care possible.

We are proud of the high-quality cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, intensivists, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, quality improvement staff, and the entire team, who are constantly focused on high-quality, safe care.
