Epilepsy Centers

Epilepsy is a general name for various types of seizures that occur when abnormal electrical activity in the brain causes an involuntary change in body movement, function, sensation, awareness or behavior. Epilepsy affects approximately 2.5 million Americans.

St. John Providence Health System Neuroscience Center of Excellence offers the latest treatment for controlling seizures and restoring quality of life. Our staff includes adult and pediatric epileptologists who are fellowship-trained, board-certified experts in epilepsy and seizures. We utilize a coordinated, comprehensive approach to controlling, and sometimes preventing, seizures.

This begins with a through monitoring and assessment including obtaining details of past seizures. Our team works together to provide appropriate assessment and diagnosis to achieve positive outcomes for each patient.

At our Epilepsy Centers, we help adult and pediatric patients control and sometimes prevent seizures using a combination of treatments.

Medication

Based on a comprehensive assessment of the nature, type and severity of the disorder, epilepsy treatment through antiepileptic drugs are the most common way to control seizures.

Lifestyle modification

In some patients diet, stress, fatigue and chronic sleep loss can be triggers for the onset of seizures. If this is determined to be the case, we will coordinate with our Behavioral Health experts to help manage these behaviors.

Epilepsy Monitoring Unit

St. John Providence Health System's brand new Epilepsy Center in Novi opened in 2001.
