The Audiology Department at St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital, Macomb Center provides inpatient and outpatient care for adult and pediatric patients experiencing hearing and balance disorders.
We offer two audiologists:
- Susan Schwark, AuD, who has a doctorate in audiology from Central Michigan University
- Anne Maynard, AuD, who has a doctorate in audiology from the University of Florida.
What Audiologists Do
Hearing is a complex process of perceiving sound and attaching meaning to it. Fully developed at birth, the human ear responds to sounds that range in loudness from very faint to very loud. Even infants in utero respond to sound.The ability to hear is critically important for normal communication to occur. Audiology is the study of hearing, hearing disorders and habilitation/rehabilitation for persons with hearing loss. Audiologists are health care professionals who identify, assess and manage disorders of the auditory and balance systems.
The primary functions of audiologists include:

providing aural rehabilitation to children and adults

selecting, fitting and dispensing amplification systems

preventing hearing loss through the provision and fitting of hearing protective devices
