Visitor’s Guide and Information

Visiting Guidelines

We understand visits from family and friends are a vital part of a patient’s health care. Our goal is to help your friend or loved one recover as soon as possible. You can help by being a considerate visitor. We do request that visitors observe the following guidelines.

The Considerate Visitor…
  • Observes patient visiting hours
  • Observes the hospital’s “NO SMOKING ANYWHERE” policy
  • Leaves the patient's room when care is rendered
  • Respects the privacy of other patients by speaking softly
  • Leaves children under age 12 at home
  • Limits the number of visitors to two at one time

Visiting Hours

General visiting hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Visitors are not allowed in the hospital after 8 p.m. without prior authorization from the nursing staff and hospital security. Visiting hours vary on specialized units (see below). Call 313-343-3909 to verify your patient's visiting hours.

Intensive Care Units: (adult visitors only)
MICU
- Medical Intensive Care - 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
CICU - Coronary Intensive Care - 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
SICU - Surgical Intensive Care - 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
CVIC - Cardiovascular Intensive Care - 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m
PICU - Pediatrics Intensive Care Units - Visiting hours arranged through the unit Charge Nurse

Pediatrics
We welcome and encourage one parent to stay with the child at all times. Another family member or close friend may stay with the child if the parent must leave. Due to space limitation and the needs of other children on the unit, we ask that only two people visit with the patient at one time as follows:

  • Parents and grandparents — 24-hour-a-day visitation
  • Visitors over 14 years of age — 11 a.m. - 8 p.m.
  • Visitors younger than 14 years, including brothers and sisters, please check with your nurse.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
Visitation appointment ONLY through nursing

Operating Room/Ambulatory Surgery
Adult visitors are to wait in the surgical lounge - 2nd floor

Local and Peds Ambulatory
Visitors should take the west entrance elevators to third floor.

Emergency Center
Visitors are to wait in the Emergency Waiting Room

Psych/Med
Monday & Wednesday: 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Thursday: 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
Saturday: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Sunday: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Holidays: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Tuesday/Friday: No Visiting

Dining for Our Visitors

Moross Market Cafe

The Moross Market Cafe is located in the ground floor of the Van Elslander Pavilion and offers a variety of hot food and cold food. The Moross Market Cafe is open 7 days a week, during the following times:

Monday-Friday

  • Breakfast: 6:30 to 10 a.m.
  • Lunch: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Snack and Grill service: 2 to 4 p.m.
  • Dinner: 4 to 7:30 p.m.

Weekend Hours

  • Breakfast: 6:30 to 10 a.m.
  • Lunch: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Snack services: 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Dinner: 4 to 7:30 p.m.
Brioche Dorée

Brioche Dorée is located on the lower level of Professional Building One, and is open Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. for coffee, pastries, bagels, and breakfast; 10 to 11 a.m. for coffee, pastries, and bagels; and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for coffee pastries, and lunch. Brioche Dorée offers French pastries, breakfast sandwiches, and specialty sandwiches, salads, and soups.

Campus Layout/Parking

St. John Hospital and Medical Center provides several parking options for patients, visitors and guests. Parking  is available in the East and West parking decks, as well as the North Lot.

Parking Rates :

  • $4 for valet services
  • All self-parking: Free
Valet Parking Hours of Service

Monday - Friday:
East Entrance: 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (cars retrieved until 9 p.m.)
Van Elslander Pavilion North Entrance: 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. (cars retrieved until 9 p.m.)

Saturday and Sunday:
Van Elslander Pavilion North Entrance: 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Amenities

Gift Shop

The LeFontbonne Shoppe is located on the ground floor of the hospital, between Professional Building One and the Center Lobby. Click here for more information.

Gift Cart

Our volunteers take the Gift Cart to each floor to enable our patients and guests the opportunity to purchase small items such as snacks, gifts and magazines. The volunteers uses the proceeds from these and other projects are used to provide funds for special projects for our patients.

Guiding Stars

Let us help you find your destination within St. John Hospital. Volunteers are available for directional or wheelchair assistance within the Hospital.

Chapel

St. Edward’s Chapel is open 24 hours and can be reached by taking the South Entrance elevators to the first floor. Catholic liturgy is offered Monday - Friday at 11:30 a.m. and Saturdays at 4 p.m. Exceptions will be posted on the chapel door. For other spiritual care needs, call (313) 343-7850 or contact the hospital operator.

Lost & Found

St. John Hospital and Medical Center's Security Department operates a Lost and Found service. Call 313-343-3860 to report lost items or to retrieve items found. While the hospital is not responsible for the loss of personal belongings, every effort is made to return items found.

ATMs
  • Credit Union One automatic teller machine is located in the lower level of the Van Elslander Pavilion.
  • Credit Union Advantage located in the strip mall next to the hospital on Moross between Buddy’s Pizza and SVS Vision.
  • Comerica automatic teller machine is located on the lower level of Professional Building One next to the elevator.
Telephones

When using in-house phones to reach services or anyone inside the Hospital,
simply dial the last fi ve digits of the number. A TTY pay phone is located near the South Entrance.

Smoking Policy

Effective July 1, 2007, St. John Providence Health System(SJPHS) adopted a tobacco-free policy that was implemented at all of our sites. A Tobacco-Free Environment means no smoking is permitted in any of the St. John Health Buildings and outside locations including campus grounds, walkways, parking lots and private vehicles.

Wireless Internet Access

Complimentary wireless internet access is available to visitors who bring a personal laptop computer. To use the service, simply log onto your wireless-enabled computer and scan for wireless networks. Then click on “St. John Internet.” After reviewing and accepting the terms of use on the connection screen, you’ll be able to browse the Internet.
