FACT SHEET - St. John Hospital and Medical Center, Detroit, Expansion and Renovation Project

Operating Vision

To establish St. John Hospital and Medical Center as Southeast Michigan's leading-edge regional destination hospital. This vision for excellence will set the stage for:

  • Clinical practice, education and research
  • Advanced technology and facilities
  • Patient-focused redesign of services

  • Solidify St. John Hospital and Medical Center as the destination hospital of choice for advanced medical care, technology, research and education in cardiovascular care, cancer care and surgery.
  • Position St. John Hospital and Medical Center for growth in women's health, pediatrics, orthopedics, neurosurgery and spine surgery.
  • Improve partnerships with physicians by integrating them in all the plans.
  • Provide the best possible patient experience.
  • Provide the best possible work environment for our physicians and associates.

Immediate Plans

Construction of an eight-level 288,000 square-foot North Pavilion at St. John Hospital and Medical Center, to include:

  • A highly accessible main entrance with atrium lobby adjacent to convenient parking.
  • Consolidated outpatient diagnostic services including X-ray, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI scan), Computed Tomography (CT scan) and Lab services.
  • Addition of 144 private rooms.
  • Upgraded and consolidated cardiovascular institute, with catheterization labs, electrophysiology labs, vascular labs, special procedure rooms, recovery space, and offices for research and education.
  • * This $141 million investment is expected to open in 2008.

Expanded and redesigned Emergency Department:

  • With the relocation of Imaging, the ED will receive an additional 30,000 square feet to improve patient privacy and patient satisfaction.  Modules will be designed to move the patients and families immediately through triage and into 67 private treatment rooms to improve medical care, privacy, comfort, family waiting and turnaround.  The patient and family experience will be improved by providing care in private rooms that will be large enough to support the patient and their immediate family.
  • Accessibility for ambulances will improve by relocating the ED entrance closer to Moross Road.
  • More convenient patient parking for walk-in and less urgent patients and their families.
  • This $15 million investment is expected to be complete in early 2009.
