St. John Health-Community Health Investment Corporation currently operates ten school-based health centers: five within the Detroit Public School one in Hazel Park Schools, one in Covenant House, one in Highland Park Schools, one in Clintondale School System and one within the Cornerstone Schools. The health centers offer a myriad of medical services ranging from physical exams, immunizations, lab work, vision and hearing screenings, sexually transmitted disease testing and health fairs. The health centers, through counseling, offered services in the form of individual, family and group counseling, referrals, screenings, and school consultations. Through the centers’ health education programming, services were offered in the areas of sexual abstinence, social development, violence prevention, blood pressure management, and asthma management.
Medical Services
The Health Centers offer various medical and mental health services, which are tailored for each site. Medical services provided for the students, school staff and community include:
- Chronic disease management
- Acute medical care
- Sports physicals
- Complete physical examinations
- Nebulizer treatments for asthma attacks
- Immunizations
- Diabetes management
- Health Fairs
- Hypertension management
- Lead screenings
- Lab Work
- STD/HIV prevention and follow-up
- Prenatal care
- OB/GYN examinations
- Vision/hearing screening
- Hepatitis B immunizations
- Flu shots
- Medication management/administration
- Mental health counseling/referrals and follow-ups
- Obesity/Nutrition counseling
- Physical abuse examinations

Program Services
The Health Centers offer a myriad of programs and services. The programs offered are developed based on a survey administered to students and parents of the targeted school population. The survey assesses the needs of the students and parents, which are unique to each school population. Based on the survey, the Health Centers currently offer the following programs and services:
- Deep Breath (asthma management)
- Sugar Check (diabetes management)
- Nutrition (healthy eating and exercise)
- Hypertension (blood pressure management)
- Project S.A.V.E. (Supporting Abstinence Via Education, sexual abstinence)
- H.O.T. (Hazards of Tobacco, substance abuse program)
- B.A.B.E.S. (Beginning Awareness Basic Education Studies, substance abuse prevention)
- S.A.V.E. (Students Against Violence Everywhere)
- Lifeskills (self-esteem)
- Nurse Preceptors (Nurse Practitioner Student Interns)
- Asthma Camp
- Abstinence Retreat
