St. John Hospital and Medical Center is a nationally recognized leader in cardiovascular care, a leader in heart and vascular research and treatment, and home to the W. Warren Shelden Heart and Circulatory Center – unique in Southeast Michigan and across the country in creating an environment where specialists in cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, vascular surgery, neurosurgery and radiology can provide a cross-functional approach to patient care. We are a Blue Distinction Center for Cardiac Care as recognized by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association.
Our cardiac staff includes some of the nation’s most respected cardiovascular physicians and expert nursing staff. Together, over the past 30 years, we have built our name on innovative treatment techniques, comprehensive prevention programs and compassionate care.
Heart Failure and Chest Pain Center Accreditations
St. John Hospital and Medical Center received accreditation as a Heart Failure Center in the Summer of 2010, the first in Michigan to achieve this recognition. We also achieved accreditation as a Chest Pain Center with PCI on May 20, 2009, further demonstrating our ongoing commitment to provide excellent, timely cardiac care to our patients. The hospital was re-accredited in July of 2012 as a Chest Pain Center.

Leading in Advanced Procedures
We have been among the leaders in the state in advanced research and procedures including coronary and carotid stenting, “beating heart” surgery for high-risk patients, laser surgery for coronary bypass procedures, biventricular pacemakers for heart failure, advanced techniques and devices for heart rhythm abnormalities, peripheral vascular intervention, and even radiation treatment for coronary heart disease complications.
We are committed to remaining a leader in heart care, and are shaping future care and programs today through our extensive ongoing research in the causes and reversal of cardiac disease.
Leading by Teaching
St. John Hospital is also an acclaimed teaching institution for graduate medical education. Our program includes both general and interventional cardiology fellowships. In addition, St. John physicians have taken a leading role in training our peers, and currently teach physicians from other major hospitals many of the latest procedures.
